FAREWELL TO ‘AUSSIE’ BARRY – BENCHWARMERS SPORTS BAR

Udon Thani has sadly lost a great man loved and respected by so many following a tragic accident. Australian born, Barry  ‘Baz’  from the Benchwarmers Sports Bar, passed peacefully away on 22 January 2018 following a motor vehicle accident the previous week. Barry had spent time in hospital following the accident but sadly he never made it through.

Out of respect to Barry’s family, we will not be publishing any details about the accident.

Family and friends said farewell at a traditional Buddhist ceremony last Thursday in Udon Thani. The ceremony was spoken in both Thai and English which included his life story and eulogies by his son and daughter.

Many people, both Thais and non-Thais attended the ceremony which was a fitting testament to his standing in the city.

Barry only opened Benchwarmers in early 2017 but quickly turned it into a welcoming cosy place offering both food and drink to his regular customers and visitors alike. He always made people feel welcome and has been described as being a great host in his bar located on Suk jai phatthana soi 3, UD. One review we found on the internet said “The Sports Bar in Soi Sampanthamit, Udon Thani is one of the best bars in the city and very popular with expats. It’s Udon Thani’s premier sports bar”

Barry was intent on turning the bar into something extra special and from what we have seen he did just that. He developed new menus and did a few alterations to improve his new found venture.

We have been reading all the messages people have left on forums like UdonMap.com and Udontalk.com where you can just see by the messages what a lovely guy he was. One message read “Probably the best send off I have ever seen in Thailand, it was close to 100 people mixed Thai and Farang”

We would like to express our sorrow to his family and friends, a great loss to Udon Thani.
